Day 1 of Marathon Training on 6/26...I had heart palpitations - for the first time in my life! Not the most auspicious way to start the journey. The scheduled run was supposed to be as follows:

Threshold/Repetition: 2 mi warmup...3x 1mi @9:47 pace w/1min recovery...4x 200m @ 1:04 pace w/200m recovery...1 mi cooldown.

Surprisingly, I managed the threshold 3 miles with little issue - despite the palpitations. However, I chose to leave off the intervals. Just to be on the safe side.

I made an appointment with a cardiologist for Thursday of that week and got myself fully checked out. As it turns out, the cardiologist is also a marathoner. Plus, he was just a nice guy. I also can't overlook the fact that I am in excellent health. Everything checked out fine. So why the palpitations? Probably a perfect storm of caffeine, hormones and slight dehydration. They gave me a heart monitor to wear while running (I don't...I sweat so much the first time I wore it the pads came sliding off my body). Luckily, it's never happened again.

For the rest of that week, I ran some easy miles and another day of threshold training. Same stats: 2 mi warmup, 3x 1mi @ 9:47 w/1 min recovery, 1 mi cooldown. Total mileage: 26.

Week #2 started on the Fourth of July. That was tough as we were upstate visiting with family for a barbeque. Too much food, drink and shenanigans made it tough to get in the long run I was supposed to. I struggled the whole time. It's gorgeous land upstate, but mighty hilly. I was so tired I was taking walk breaks.

On Tuesday 7/5, I tried running again...this time on a treadmill. Again I was too tired and had to stop about 1 mile in. That all changed on Wednesday. Late Wednesday I ran an easy(ish) 8 miles...then followed it up almost exactly 12 hours later with another 8 miles. The plan is trying to get me running on tired legs (as if I'd have a hard time doing that!). I finished the week with more easy miles...for a total of 30 miles.

Week #3 is still happening! Made it out yesterday for a nice 14-mile long run. I'm planning on some easy recovery miles later this afternoon before hitting up the pool for some laps.
